How We Started

Balerno Village Trust  was formed from the existing Balerno Community Council as a pro-active body of local residents and workers who could campaign on local issues. The early focus was on conservation and resulted in the successful listing of key village buildings, preventing their development as housing and preserving the traditional village look at the heart of the area. BVT has been running a Farmers Market since 2005. In 2014 Friends of Main Street was started to work with the council to keep the village centre green and beautiful.

What We Do

BVT runs Balerno Farmers Market every second Saturday of the month; convenes a Friends of Main Street group who improve and tend public planting in the village. We have helped a local campaign to fundraise for refurbishment of a 2G sport spitch, and will be managing it as a social enterprise for the use of local people from autumn 2016. BVT supports local initiatives such as the annual Balerno Music Festival.  In 2016 BVT is running a community consultation with the Community Council to help develop a plan for the community and priorities for Harlaw Hydro Community Benefit Funding. From 2017 we expect to manage a small grants programme and strategic funding from Harlaw Hydro Community Benefit Funds. We run working groups to develop infrastructure projects in the village including the development of a community garden and a visitors centre in the Pentlands.
