Broughty Ferry Development Trust

Area of Operation:

Dundee City Council "Ferry" Ward
Tayside & Fife

How We Started

The Broughty Ferry Development Trust (BFDT) was established in April 2009 for the “Ferry” Ward area of Dundee City (population 25,000), and is currently constituted as an unincorporated association - although it will shortly move over to the new legal form of a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). In its initial couple of years, the Trust has focused on projects to improve the attractiveness of the town as a visitor destination and place to live

What We Do

BFDT has great ambitions for a new facility on the Castle Green to replace the existing dilapidated bathers’ facilities, and prevent the town’s key development location being passed over to private hands. Having secured lottery funding to develop the idea, the Trust has persuaded the Local Authority to back its proposal for an innovative, semi-subterranean, eco-building next to the castle, which will incorporate cafĂ© facilities, changing/showering/toilet facilities, a community area, and an interpretation/exhibition space. The c.£2m price-tag means this ambition may be some way from realisation, and BFDT engaged The Pool to assist its strategic thinking on options. Other Trust initiatives concern the town’s heritage, and include improving / providing access to the town’s historic Fisherman’s Graveyard, ensuring the reinstatement of “Barometer Cottage” at the harbour, and seeking funding to restore/ safeguard Victorian street lamps
