How We Started

Following 13 years of community activism and fundraising the Coigach Community Hall in Achiltibuie was completed in 1999

This modern, versatile community facility became the model for similar rural community facilities across the Highlands. In 2008 a process seeking to address the wider issues affecting the Coigach area was started by the community council, this leading to a community “Have Your Say” consultation day in 2009, and the formation in 2010 of the Coigach Community Development Company as the area’s community development trust. The community company has been identified by Highlands & Islands Enterprise as a “community anchor organisation” for the purposes of stimulating the economic and community development of the area, and was subsequently awarded HIE/ LEADER funding to employ two half-time local development officers.

Formed for the benefit the 250-300 strong community of the Coigach peninsula, north of Ullapool, the Coigach Community Development Company is developing a broad-based action plan grounded on the priorities identified by the 2009 open day, and refined through a 2010/11 community survey. Meanwhile the CCDC is researching the feasibility of community owned housing and a community wind turbine as key priorities. A community vote organised in April 2010 mandated the CCDC to pursue the wind turbine project

In addition the company is developing a 50/50 joint venture hydro energy project with local landowners Scottish Wildlfe Trust. In 2011 the company failed to buy the former Achiltibuie Hydroponicum through a Community Right to Buy as the seller pulled out at the last minute.
