How We Started

Creetown Initiative was formed in 2004 in response to a number of challenges that the local community was facing.

Creetown Initiative Consultancy arm was created in 2006 when community groups elsewhere saw what we were doing in Creetown and wanted assistance to carry out similar projects in their own area.  We have now worked with other groups on over 60 projects across Scotland.

What We Do

Creetown Initiative is a community development trust and consultancy service.  Since 2006 we have secured £3.1 million for clients' projects and over £2.6 million for our own home-based projects.

Our expertise covers all aspects of project development and management including community consultations, feasibility studies, business planning, funding, governance, mentoring and project delivery.

We now employ 5 full time and 7 part time staff.

Over the years we have built up an extensive network of partners, associates and relationships with many funders. 

We believe that the experience we have gained creating and growing our own social enterprise provides practical experience to help others and we are very happy to talk to other groups.

Our Projects

Home Based

  • £200k development of village playpark
  • Delivery of youth services to village and nearby town, Newton Stewart
  • Cycle loan scheme and Car Club which has electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Film making services
  • Ownership, refurbishment and management of village hall
  • Up-cycling project to reduce textiles going to landfill
  • Community bee conservation project
  • We produce a half-yearly community magazine
  • £800k project to convert an old public house into the Creetown Enterprise Centre which houses a 29 bed bunkhouse, and arts and craft cooperative shop, community charity shop, a base for our car club cars, cycle hire
  • We have also delivered a number of arts based projects resulting in a number of sculptures and art installations around the village.
  • Purchase of our own office premises (we now own and manage three properties in the village.)

Consultancy Projects

  • Raised over £1m for the renovation of the Theatre Royal in Dumfries
  • Feasibility studies and business plans for Kingussie, Kirkcudbright, Crocketford and Sorbie Tower
  • Community consultations for SNH, Southern Upland Partnership and Galloway and South Ayrshire Biospher
  • Community Action Plans (including consultations) for Kirkcolm, Coldstream and Canonbie.
  • Mentoring and project support to Newton Stewart Initiative, Moniave, Auchencairn, Lockerbie Old School, Whithorn Trust, Cree Valley Community Woodlands Trust
  • Coordination of development of the Stranraer Business Improvement District
  • Development and capacity building of Stranraer Development Trust and their projects including the first Stranraer Oyster Festival
  • Business & Development Plan for Braemar Castle
  • Community consultation and needs assessment to support community purchase of Crook Inn, Tweedsmuir.
  • Funding assistance to many groups such as Cree Valley Community Woodland, Newton Stewart Rugby Club, Isle Futures.

Our Future Plans

To continue to be reactive to and meet the needs and challenges of our own community as they arise as well as offering our assistance to other community groups.
