How We Started

Development Coll (DC) was established under the Initiative at the Edge programme as the Isle of Coll is one of the most remote and fragile communities in the UK. Major challenges facing the island include a lack of affordable housing, essential services (e.g. a petrol pump), visitor accommodation, and social / recreational facilities.

What We Do

Development Coll has secured various ‘bring’ recycling facilities on the island and a number of enhancements to the public realm, such as new notice boards in the main village. It also supports several local groups including Coll Recycling Group, Sports Association, Seniors’ Social Club. Currently, its main focus is a planned new community centre at a cost of c. £2.5 million, which it has secured land and planning permission for. The new centre will be built to high environmentally specifications and will include: • main hall • meeting rooms with video conferencing • kitchens • library/archive • an outdoor sports pitch • offices for Development Coll • visitor accommodation in a planned adjacent small bunkhouse

Our Future Plans

Other priorities being investigated are affordable housing and a wind turbine.
