How We Started

Glenboig is an area that has suffered from the closure of its coal mines and fire clay works and in 2000, the Council threatened closure of the Neighbourhood House which is owned by North Lanarkshire Council Social Work Department. In response, local residents came together to form a Steering Group to take on the Neighbourhood House.

What We Do

GNH is a busy resource used by many local people and has a high number of volunteers. It runs a range of initiatives in:
• Community Café
• Over 50’s group for Carers and those being cared for;
• youth work;
• community learning and;
• health
For example, we are open 7 days per week offering activities for over fifties, children from 5-18 and those wishing to return to learning. Our café operates as a training element, offering training to young people and those more socially excluded from learning within the community.

GNH has been instrumental in developing plans for a new play park and a company in the name of Glenboig Village Park Community Play Area has been set up to take this forward. We are also in negotiation with the Council regarding the transfer of ownership of current premises with a view to developing a new multi-purpose community centre.
