How We Started

The Helmsdale & District Development Trust (HDDT) evolved from the Helmsdale & District Development Group, which was established in 2010.

The new HDDT was formerly established in April 2012 as a community response to a continuing economic and demographic decline as the area consistently missed out on development opportunities and initiatives that benefitted other Highland areas.

What We Do

A little update:

At the recent Highland Third Sector Awards, HDDT are delighted to announce that our Affordable Housing Project was awarded the Community Initiative Award, at Strathpeffer Pavilion on 25th August 2015.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Determined to reverse these negative trends for the population of 842 spread over Sutherland’s two most North-Easterly parishes, the Group has engaged and consulted the area’s communities, and formulated a comprehensive Business Development Plan based on their findings.

The plan spans housing, young people, services, business/employment, culture, heritage, tourism, and the environment, and potential initiatives have been identified for a petrol station, core paths, composting, community energy, paths, a woodland coppicing centre, farmers market, boatbuilding/rowing club and harbour development

Our Assets

  • Affordable Housing - 4 units & 3 self build initiative plots
  • Kitchen Garden - 2 acres of agricultural land for use as a community garden area/growing food

Our Future Plans

Our future plans entail the infrastructure development of the harbour, to ensure the harbour is seen as a viable prospect for use by the developers for the planned 420 turbine offshore deep water development in the Moray Firth.

Other projects include the reopening of the disused filling station, development of business units to support the offshore development, supporting the railway station development.
