How We Started

Traditionally the local economy has been based on agriculture and fishing. The contraction of both these industries has had considerable effect on the village with declining employment. Associated with this is a lack of job opportunities for the young in the area resulting in many being forced to move away. Isle Futures grew out of an earlier association that was established to address theses issues. Our aim is to support and strengthen the economic, social and environmental life of the Isle of Whithorn through community participation and ownership.

What We Do

To date we have established a web-site to promote the initiative, attracted funding to employ a research and development officer, built a new harbour slipway, organised a programme of local events and festivals and established Isle Network, a business support initiative for local people and businesses. The main focus of our work at present is the establishment of a One Stop Shop to deliver and coordinate a wide range of services required in our community including: • Local learning opportunities • Business advice clinics • Tourism information • Promotion of local crafts and goods • Benefits and employment advice
