How We Started

Early in 2014, a number of people on the Pittenweem facebook group started to exchange messages expressing concern about two of the three pubs in Pittenweem being up for sale, with one actually closing down. The "Save a pub for Pittenweem" campaign rapidly gathered momentum, and the group held its first public meeting on 26th February 2014. Over 40 people turned up, to hear about the Pub situation, watch a film about development trusts, and have a chance to question another local CDT - Tayport. There was lots of enthusiasm for a Development Trust which could do all sorts of good things for Pittenweem, including raising money to save one of the pubs, renovating the open air pool, and lots of other suggestions. This threat of closure of key local businesses has been a wake-up call for the people of Pittenweem to get together and do their best to maintain the character and vibrancy of our community.

With help from DTAS, we formed a steering group to take things forward, and Pittenweem Community Trust was registered as a company limited by guarantee in June 2014.

Since then, other challenges have arisen, the most recent being the threat of closure of our Library in 2016.
