How We Started

The Langholm Initiative was formed in 1994, primarily by the local business community, in response to the economic decline of the area due to the decline in textile manufacturing.

What We Do

The Langholm Initiative has approximately 95 members (mostly local businesses) and is involved in a wide-range of projects including: • Bonnie Langholm • Christmas Lights • Langholm & Eskdale Music and Arts Festival • Culture & Heritage • MacDiarmid Society • Langholm Walking Group • Langholm Cycling Group • River Esk Liaison Committee • Langholm & Eskdale Accommodation Providers • Town Centre Regeneration • Shop Local Campaign Face Lift Scheme • Langholm Recycling Group including composting project The Initiative is also a local contact point for Business Gateway providing free information and advice to existing business and to those wishing to start their own business. The Initiative’s main focus at present is to bring Buccleuch Mill, a historic textile mill in Langholm, back into use. The mill has been renovated by its owner, and the Initiative has an agreement with them to develop it into managed office and work space for rental to private businesses and community organisations. The Initiative has a long lease on the Mill and is to be an ‘anchor’ tenant, sub-leasing it to these other organisations. They also aim to provide a range of related support services. Other historical mills within the area may also be re-developed in this way.
