The North Ronaldsay Trust

Area of Operation:

Island of North Ronaldsay, Orkney
Northern Isles (Shetland & Orkney)

Established:
2000
Population:
60

How We Started

In 1998 the North Ronaldsay lighthouse was automated. This resulted in job losses and the buildings associated with the lighthouse becoming empty and potentially derelict. The trust was established in response to these events. Its aims were to secure the use of the vacant lighthouse buildings for community use and to investigate opportunities for job creation through the utilisation of natural resources available on the island.

What We Do

We are engaged in a range of economic, environmental and heritage projects including:
• the establishment of a community run yarn production business.
• the purchase and refurbishment of an old church.
• running tours of the Lighthouse in partnership with the Northern Lighthouse board.

Our Assets

  • Ex-accommodation blocks, principle’s house and machine stores at the lighthouse
  • Wool spinning and yarn production machinery
  • Old church building

Our Future Plans

Plans for the future involve establishing high quality self catering accommodation units at the lighthouse site and setting up a tearoom and associated gift shop, through which we aim to sell garments made with wool produced through the yarn production business.
