How We Started

Transition Town Forres (TTF) was established in 2008 and has since pursued a wide range of practical Climate Challenge Fund funded projects to start moving the area, and its population of just under 10,000, onto a more sustainable and resilient footing, through reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and promoting the local economy

What We Do

These projects have included establishing a regular Forres farmers’ market, creating a community vegetable garden linked to a worm-composting enterprise, producing a local food guide, providing re-skilling training, and running a “carbon clinic”, in addition to ongoing awareness raising events, publications and sustainability education in the local schools. The group rents common good land and a pavilion building from Moray Council for the farmers’ market and community garden.

TTF has ambitions to develop/extend the land and building further as a community environmental education centre and market garden, with cafĂ© and leisure facilities. TTF has also undertaken a feasibility study for a hydro power project on the Burn of Mosset, and is pursuing this positive opportunity, and also has funding approved for a heating system for the building. But it faces a major issue of punitive rents from the Council for the common good resources, and is investigating options – including for the land and building to be transferred to the community.
