Upper Eskdale Development Group

Area of Operation:

Eskdalemuir & Bentpath, Dumfries and Galloway
South West (Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway)

How We Started

Eskdalemuir is one of the remotest settlements in Dumfries and Galloway and over the years has lost its shop, pub and many public services. Following the closure of the local primary school, a number of community consultation events where held in early 2006. This culminated in the creation of Upper Eskdale Development Group (UEDG), with an initial focus on securing the redundant school building for activities and facilities highlighted in the community consultation, and a long-term aim of furthering the regeneration of the local community and of community spirit.

What We Do

The Group recently took ownership of the former primary school and has ambitious plans to develop this into a community pub or bistro and a resource centre that will provide meeting and workshop space for arts and other cultural activities, community learning, and to support local artists and crafts people. UEDG envisage that the centre will generate new jobs and business opportunities locally. The Group has a strong interest in sustainable development and will use natural resources and renewable technologies to re-furbish and run the building, sourced locally wherever possible.
