Rural Housing Burdens give communities and community landowners which are registered as a Rural Housing Body a special type of pre-emption right allowing them the opportunity to buy back property it has sold for the provision of affordable rural housing. (A right of pre-emption is an entitlement to have the first option to buy back the property in the event of it coming up for sale.)
Using a rural housing burden community landowners releasing land for sale at low cost can ensure that houses built on that land are not subsequently sold as holiday homes or let as holiday lets, and can also ensure continued affordability of the house.
