Stronsay Development Trust - Northern Isles (Shetland & Orkney)

Established 2004

The SDT have embarked on a broad programme of local development in partnership with other existing local groups and agencies. The Board works through sub-groups which include other people who have an immediate interest in a project or can bring special skills or experience to it. The Board is regularly updated on projects and, when a project is considered feasible, approves an application for funding. When everything is in place, final approval for the project will be sought from the community. Only then can any project be put into operation. Projects currently under way include a recreation ground for young people, the restoration of an historic lifeboat, installing a community-owned wind turbine to provide income for the island, and the creation of units to accommodate small businesses. The Trust also funds a newsletter which is distributed free to every household on Stronsay.
